I talked to a guy today that has worked on lakes that have this type of problem. He stated that they used a boiler to backflush the system and kill the mussels in the resevoir piping. He said this is done once a month and it maintains the system. The water board is having a meeting on the 23rd of this month that is closed to the public, would love to be a fly on the wall there. If the lake was to close to incoming boats it would be an annual loss to the lake of approximately $590.000. The docks have been attained with the help of the Department of Boating and Waterways and that opens up legal issues and would probably cause the dock monies to be paid back to the Department of Boating and Waterways. There have been other grants that would probably have to be paid back. I really do not believe closing the lake to incoming boats would be financially feasible and think it would place the lake in debt. I think it is an option and the board realizes that it would put them in debt. I am hoping this is true and the real issue is how to keep the mussles out with preventive measures. If you do come to the lake make sure your livewells and bait tank are dry or you will be turned away.
Peace
