2271, Question about polerized glasses
Posted by ck, Tue Jan-06-04 07:45 PM
Im looking to get a new pair of glasses.I saw a nice pair of bolle's at Big 5 $90 on sale for 40,they were amber in color but were labeled as golf glasses. Are all polerized glasses the same or are some better for fishing than others? I have been told Maui Jims were the best but $250 for glasses is out of the question. What do you guys suggest?

Thanks,chris

All polarized glasses are definitely not equal. Solar Bats and Kaenons are two good ones, I use the Kaenons with yellow lense and they've been great. The frame really wraps around your head and once they're on they don't move, so no worrying about bending over and them falling off, or turning around when you're running the boat, etc. If you're in the area of bass world west you can try on a pair. Take em outside and look at green objects. I like a lense that picks up a lot of green, it tends to make the bass stand out really well when you're sight fishing.

I just got a pair of SPY polarized sunglasses(model:meteor)They are awesome.Very light weight, holds firm to your head and wraps around perfect to minimize light coming in.I have a narrow face and it's hard to find a good pair of glasses that don't stick way out on the sides.I have worn them all day without any headache, which is a big plus. They can be a bit pricey too,but you usually get way you pay for.

I would recommend a pair of Kaenon Polarized. The most popular among the freshwater guys is the KORE fram with Yellow 35 lens color. Copper 12 is the all around lens. These glasses wrap around your face blocking the side sun from entering and putting out a glare that causes you to squint and have headaches. The lens reflects light back into the water creating greater depth perception along with superb visual perception. The fish tends to just glow or stand out. If you have any questions you can call Brian or Steve of Kaenon at 949-574-7918 or visit your local retailer/dealer. The lens design helps the glasses fit snug to your upper cheek area knocking that glare out also. If you have to ask, yes these are what a majority of the tournament guys are after. Also, they make different frame styles for other personal use or a great gift for the wife/girlfriend/etc. They also come available in Prescription. You must contact Kaenon for further information on that though. Thanks & enjoy-Rich "Bama" Welch

Don't skimp when it comes to your eyes. Probably the most critical piece of gear you can have on the water. Buy an established brand and suck up the payola. Smith has been making shades for yrs and you can't beat the line of Action Optics for the price. Buy glass they will last you longer without as much care. Lens color is up to you, but rose or amber is best in low light conditions like fog or morn or eve or overcast. Neutral grey is good for bright days like on the ocean. When I commercial fished I had a few pairs for each condition. I have never regretted the price except at the register. The angle of polarization is critical, and Smith makes a science of it. You won't be as tired with a good pair either. If you fish for any extended period of time you will develop sun spots or burns on your eyes if you don't take care of them. Plus a good pair will help you see little things that matter such as fish or bottom contour. Do it!

If you are a Costco member, check out the deals they have there. They have some Maui Jims as well as Bolles, H2Optics, etc. Prices are way lower than most places. Selection varies from store to store a bit.

Anyone know of a place near Diamond Bar where I can try out some Solarbat or Kaenon sunglasses?

Solarbat glasses are sold at Walmart for $13.00. IMO there is no way they compare to Kaenon.

I believe Anglers Marine in Anaheim sell Kaenon. They start at around $120 and go up.

The 'FLW' Solar Bats that Wal-Mart sells are at the very bottom of their quality list. The high end Bats are very nice and range from $90 to $140.

The best of the Kaeon's are the Kore. You can get them at Sport Chalet for $180. A little pricey but nice shades. You might wanna check into Costa Del Mar's too while you're at. Good quality glasses and you can get them in the $100-$130 range.

I was checking out Action Optics--they are very cool, soothing to the eyes and I like the photo-chromic tint available on some styles. It changes with the amount of light so you can sight fish with overcast and use the same glasses for when it's brighter out. They are a premium sunglass but prices are more digestible than many other brands.
