If you were targeting 3lb average Spotted bass on a clear water Res., what type/color swimbait would you prefer?

Depending on how deep you were wanting to fish I would try the following baits in colors like SHAD or BLUEGILL, BASS

Castaics for shallow fishing

Or Matts bass for deep to mid fishing also try some of the storms or big hammers

I know alot of spots are cought on HUDDS and SLAMMERS but IMO if your targeting 3lbers theres better baits that those.

Spots are down right mean, I have had 1 1/2 pounders jump all over my 9" Slammer up at Folsom. I think a swimbait with exaggerated action and a slim profile would work great for Spots. I hope to prove this theory up at Folsom this year throwing a Platinum. When I saw it in the water for the first time it seemed like a great Spot bait, except that it will get destroyed pretty quickly. A triple trout might also be a good choice.

I've not really targeted spots with swimbaits but did pick up a nice one on a 7" slammer not too long ago... it crushed it two times before I boated her, she definetely wanted that bait!

I would say a 7" slammer and a 7" triple trout. If your fishing a place with alot of active 3 lb spots, those baits will get bit.

I have cuaght a few nice spots and smallies on the 7" slammer in the hitch color in the shasta area.

A lot of great suggestions, Thanks guys! I have never tried any swimbaits when targeting Spots so I am experimenting. I have drop shotted bass trix baits with some success. I have some River2Sea baits that I want to try and I think I will go down to TW and get a couple of the MattLures.

The best rigs I have found for big spots are the old style Castaic Craw and the Castaic Threadfin Shad. I use the Craw when fishing around cover and in shallow water(color hasn't seemed to matter). I use the Threadfin for casting in open water and along shorlines. For deep water, I carolina rig the Threadfin with a 6-8 foot leader and whatever size weight I need to get down to depth quickly. I have caught dozens of spots over 5 pounds with these lures, including 2 seven pound spots! The only 2 over 5 I have caught that weren't caught using the Castaics were on handcarved topwater lures.
Castaic Craws are getting VERY hard to find, so if you find a source, PLEASE share it!

What is the best Big Hammer color that mimics a BlueGill?

I like to throw #19 olive herring or #48 brown grunion to imitate bluegill. Those are just good fish catching colors. My only fish over 10 on the Big Hammer that wasn't a bedfish was caught casting the #48.

I have my own color, Rob's Bluegill #80 but that is a bed fishing color, not designed so much for cast and retrieve.

I cant believe nobody has said optimums. The 5 inch version is perfect. Ive had 2 pound spots inhale them.
