I would use a GX8 but I use a Phenix 965 instead which has slightly more backbone then a GX8. I do use a Newell 220 and if you have one then you probably know a 220 won't feel as smooth as calcutta 300 or 400 but my 220's cast as good as any of them. I've put these reels up against some big fish in saltwater and they have caught me plenty of big fish. My calcutta's have not held up as well the newells in similar situations. Asid from their duribility they have the same size drags as a penn 500 and plenty of torque for their size. One negative is a lot of guys won't fish them becasue they don't have a level wind but I actually prefer reels with out a level wind so this works out to be a big benifit for me. Another negative aspect I have found is that depending on the individual reel a lot of 220's produce a slight ticking sound when wound. I supose it could work for you or against you. Some newells have a hallowed out sound to them too. Like I said you have to take on a Newell by Newell basis. I've been fishing newells since the 80's and wouldn't trade them for anything. They make noise but more importantly they catch fish. I wouldn't use a 220 for bigger plugs 8" or better but for the smaller plugs they are my ROC (reel of choice). The 332 and Penn 501 w/ newell conversion are my big bait reels.
