I use about 3 feet of leader on all occasions. I reel the knot through the guides but I try to avoid casting it through the guides. I trim the tag ends very short, but I know exactly how close I can shave it without risking trouble. I've never tried gluing mono or florocarbon and haven't found a need to yet, it just doesn't seem to slip as long as you cinch it down tightly. I retie as needed, at a minimum I'll retie the blood knot every 4 or 5 hours. I only retie the lure if they're a fray, the florocarbon just doesn't weaken from casting like mono does.

Using leaders in general requires a lot of attention to detail to avoid failure. It's time consuming and a bit of a nuisance at first but now that I'm used to it, I use them all the time. The floro is just so abrasion resistant and requires so much less retying that it makes it worth it to me.
